What Camera Equipment To Bring

Highly recommend the following equipment for your bear photography workshop, this is not the full list but all major items are here.

  • Carbon fiber tripod (such as Sirui W-2204) with a ball head.
  • Long lens like a 70mm-400mm f/4 or better.
  • Wide angle lens 15mm-30mm f/4 or better.
  • Circular Polarizer and UV Filter (Tiffen or Hoya at a minimum spec).
  • Waterproof backpack.
  • Full frame camera is preferred.
  • Many batteries and chargers (5 batteries and 2 chargers as a suggestion)
  • GoTenna Mesh which you can buy here
  • Tactical light (such as Fenix PD35)

An extensive packing list will be sent after your booking is confirmed.

The weather will be very mild June reaches around 47.0°F low and 62.3°F high with July a low of 51.5°F and highs around 65.3°F so bring layers and a waterproof shell at the very least. Bring enough socks (expect them to get wet) and some decent hiking boots and day pack. Sleep clothes are a must as well as a towel and wash / personal hygiene kit. Water bottle that can attach to your bag preferably metallic and some hand sanitizer.

No, we can’t have minors on-board our tours for insurance purposes.

YES ! Absolutely. If for any reason we are unable to run the tour due to adverse weather then you will need to make a claim on your travel insurance. We recommend using AIG Insurance. Check your policy has trip cancellation insurance covered. Travel Insurance is a good idea anyway in case of injury or additional costs which can occur from basic travel.


Yes you will need to land in Kodiak the day before the boat portion of the tour starts, this will be at your own cost. You will need to stay at least a day after as you will miss the flights back to Anchorage by the time the seaplane lands (and you will miss the final presentation).

You don’t have to be Usain Bolt to join us but a good level of fitness always helps make the trip go smoother. The length you decide to be on your feet or walking around is up to you.

Yes, we will send you the recommended brand in our welcome pack after you pay for your course in full.

Our adventure is all inclusive, what that means is all your flightseeing / seaplane to and from Kodiak and the boat are included, food and soft drinks while on-board, photography coaching and your bear guide are all included in the price. Permits to visit the park are also included. You will be provided hip waders during the trip with us.

Alcohol is provided in both the welcome presentation and the departure meeting, no food is provided.

No alcohol is included in the price while on-board the boat you are welcome to bring some but be aware space will be limited.

All nights stayed in Kodiak before and after the course are not included.

All flights from Anchorage to Kodiak are not included.

All flights to Anchorage are not included.

Transfers from Kodiak Airport to the hotel is not included.

Expect there to be no access to a mobile phone service. There will be a satellite phone on board for emergencies. If you want to bring your own, then you can also grab a Garmin Inreach handset, which you can buy before you come (subscription rates will apply). You can buy them on Amazon here. Garmin on Amazon

Alaska photography tour

To get to your destination, we fly you by seaplane to the boat from Kodiak. You can use the opportunity to photograph Alaska by air on this amazing 45 min flight. Best still, that’s included in the price !

Yes, you can plug in your small appliances and charge your camera batteries on board.

Once you have booked and contracts have been signed we will send you a packing list well ahead of time.

Yes, no more than 50Lbs for the seaplane from Kodiak to the boat. Check with your airline for international and domestic limits.
